Author Event: An Hour with Kristin Cashore

Tonight, I attended an author event, featuring Kristin Cashore, at An Unlikely Story, an independent bookstore in Plainville, MA. Arriving early, I wove to and fro, iced coffee in hand. My eyes peeled wide. All books were arranged in such a pleasing way. The environment was cozy and intimate. I couldn't believe I never stopped by this place before. Not only do they sell books and gadgets, they hold multiple events such as: author readings, open mic, trivia, and even yoga!

When seven o'clock rolled around, I bounded upstairs with my friend. Kristin Cashore, author of the fantasy "Graceling", was going to read from her latest book, "Jane, Unlimited", and hold a Q & A session. My heart raced, and I began to sweat profusely. Kristin Cashore is a New York Times Bestselling Author! In fact, it was because of "Graceling" that I was inspired to pick the pen back up when I wanted to give up.

After a roar of applause, Kristin sat on stage with the moderator. She read the first page and a half of "Jane, Unlimited". I sat on the edge of my seat. Not only was I enjoying the story, but I was absorbing every moment- as an author, I wanted to learn how book readings usually go. She read clearly and confidently. When she finished, the moderator asked her some questions about the book. Kristin answered in such a graceful way as to not spoil the plot for anyone. I learned about her love for umbrellas (and the clever way she integrated that into the novel!) and how vital it is to start writing, even though you know your first draft is crap. Kristin engaged me both as a reader and an author.
Finally, the moderator opened the floor to questions. Some asked about the book, while others asked about the writing process.

Sucking in a breath, I summoned the courage to raise my hand. I asked her for advice as a first time author: How did she promote her book and how did she handle that in tandem with writing the next novel?

I think I had stumped her. No joke. She paused for a good few seconds. (That was  not my intention!) When she found her voice, she tried to explain that the experience will be different for anyone. She even humbly claimed that her advice "wasn't any good" (which I totally disagree with!). Kristin  answered my question by sharing her experience of publishing her first book: full of anxiety. She was just as nervous promoting to the public, and she worked hard to balance writing the next book. The bottom line: Don't give up, keep pushing yourself, and you'll get there one way or another. And anxiety is TOTALLY normal!

My mouth hung open. I was in awe. Everything she said is what I am going through now. It was comforting to connect with an author of her caliber. Knowing that I'm not alone in the gigantic ball of author's anxiety. She closed with comments of persevering and to keep pushing through.

Once the Q&A was done, I literally sprinted to the front of the room and was the first person to get my copy of "Jane, Unlimited" signed! I was star struck. Kristin was extremely down to earth, approachable, and inspiring. When I peeked in the book, I saw "Hang in there".

Clutching my new read to my chest, my heart swelled. I floated out of the store, passing by the extremely welcoming bookstore staff. Attending this author "meet-and-greet" was an unforgettable experience. Again, it was two-fold. As a reader, I got to meet an author of books that I have read and enjoyed. As an author, I got to 1) see what holding an event was like and 2) connect with an experienced author and gain invaluable advice.

In closing, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of "Jane, Unlimited". And keep an eye on my blog- I will provide my review on it once I finish reading! Secondly, if you haven't attended an author event/reading- you should go! Usually held in smaller, independent book stores, it's an enjoyable activity where you are presented with a rare opportunity: to see the face behind the story. The person who was able to capture your attention and transport you to another world!

I am happy to share my first experience. I will be sure to attend more events held at An Unlikely Story. If you are local (in MA), I highly recommend the place!

Peace,
J.E
