Fantasy Book Review: "The Dragon Dreamer"

This was truly a unique experience rich in descriptions that appealed to all the five senses.

The story essentially revolves around two unlikely allies─ a dragon named Arak and an octopus named Scree. The two are living their separate lives, and yet they intertwine under unique circumstances. Adventure and friendship are the two grounding themes with subtle romance peppered throughout.

“The Dragon Dreamer’s” greatest strength was the descriptions. I was immersed in both the sky and water worlds, and I could easily imagine myself right there with the characters. The author has a way of painting a picture with words, which can be difficult to achieve. The novel also provided some great lessons, executed tastefully, such as learning to understand others that are different than you. (E.g. Octopus vs squid and dragon vs dweer. What are those? You’ll have to read to find out!) At times, I did get lost in the sea of names and forgot who was who- but thankfully their personalities would quickly remind me.

Finally, I have to credit the author for the quaint pictures at the start of each chapter. That being said, you may want to follow J.S. Burke if you love nature─ there are always posts of beautiful environments and creatures.

I recommend this novel for someone who is looking for a breezy adventure or has a penchant for discovery. “The Dragon Dreamer” is appropriate for a large age range.

....Ah, now I want to go scuba diving ....
