Fast Facts:

Title: The Only Gold
Author: Ethan Luke
Genre: Historical Fiction
Pages: 292
Rating: 5 stars

What is a fantasy author/reader doing with a historical fiction? Trick question: I, like most people, enjoy books of any genre if written well, and "The Only Gold" sets the bar high.

The main character, Atilius, is a scoundrel, a thief, whose one light in his life was snuffed out. His loss drives him to selling his life to fighting in the Pits- while questioning the purpose of happiness and death. He is forever at odds with the "fat man" (best name ever), also known as Braxes.

Braxes is rich, entitled, ill-mannered, and runs the Pits- an arena where blood-thirsty people watch men fight to the death. Sound familiar? The book had a Gladiator essence. At first, I was concerned it was going to be a Gladiator 2.0, but I am thrilled to be wrong. This novel by Ethan Luke can stand on its own legs and simply shines.

"The Only Gold" has a cast of memorable characters, from the paternal, yet rough-around-the-edges trainer named Drago to the lethal warrior Kelara. This allowed for multiple character arcs and "side-stories". The novel does switch POVs (perspectives) often, which for the most part is a positive. Sometimes I'll admit it would swap a bit suddenly, throwing me off guard, but trust me, that's  a minor speed bump in one hell of a ride.

I also want to commend the novel for executing a satisfying ending. It was emotional, not terribly predictable (although my guess was sadly correct), and the last chapter was a fresh take on last chapters. ... I know that sounds extremely vague, but I can't elaborate in fear of spoilers.

If you are a historical fiction buff, you will love this book. If you like lots of action, you will love this book (the fight scenes were well written). If you like character driven plots, you will love this book.

I genuinely recommend "The Only Gold" from the bottom of my heart. Sad it had to end, but I hope some of you out there give it a try.

Happy reading!

PS: Nothing about this was solicited. I bought this book on my own accord and chose to write a review  on my terms. :)

No problem! I understand how important reviews are to authors, and this work should be recognized for its awesomeness(I’m not very eloquent this AM)
